Working for the election

Jobs are created to administer the by-elections.

You make elections work

During a by-election, Elections Ontario creates jobs to administer the election.

In each electoral district, the Returning Officer will hire individuals to work at the returning office and at voting locations in that electoral district.

Poll officials are needed for both election day and advance polls. The following qualifications must be met to work as a poll official:

  • 18 years of age, Canadian Citizen and resident of Ontario for the following positions:
    • Area Manager (advance poll and election day)
    • Supervising Deputy Returning Officer (election day)
    • Deputy Returning Officer (advance poll and election day)
    • Poll Clerk (advance poll and election day)
    • Tabulator Deputy Returning Officer (advance poll)
    • Polling Day Revision Assistant (election day)
  • At least 16 years of age:
    • Information Assistant (advance poll and election day)

Your Returning Officer provides training for each election official position.

Advance Poll — Poll Officials

Advance poll voting locations are made up of the following team:

  • Advance Poll Area Manager (APAM)
  • Advance Poll Deputy Returning Officer (APDRO)
  • Advance Poll Clerk (APC)
  • Advance Poll Information Assistant (APIA)
  • Tabulator Deputy Returning Officer (TDRO)

Election Day — Poll Official Positions

A multiple voting location is a location where there are three or more polls. These locations are made up of the following teams:

  • Supervising Deputy Returning Officer (SDRO)
  • Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)
  • Poll Clerk
  • Polling Day Revision Assistant (PDRA)
  • Polling Day Information Assistant (PDIA)

A single or double voting location is made up of the following team:

  • Area Manager (AM)
  • Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)
  • Poll Clerk

Position Details

Area Manager

The advance poll Area Manager and election day Area Manager supervise assigned polls within different voting locations; travel is required. The Area Manager is required to have a valid driver’s license, use of a vehicle and a cellular phone. Responsibilities also include:

  • Contacting poll officials prior to advance polls or polling day
  • Arriving early at assigned voting locations and ensuring polls are open on time
  • Ensuring the poll layout conforms with Elections Ontario standards
  • Resolving any issues that may arise
  • Ensuring that results are called in and that each statement of the poll is balanced
  • Returning all materials to the returning office as directed by the Returning Officer

Pay:

Advance polls $234.90 per day
Election day $314.59 flat fee
Training $0.00 (Included in per day and flat fee)
Cellphone (advance polls) $2.50 per day
Cellphone (election day) $15.00 flat fee

Supervising Deputy Returning Officer (SDRO)

The SDRO supervises assigned polls within one voting location; travel throughout the day is not required. The SDRO may require a valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle and have a cellular telephone. Responsibilities also include:

  • Contacting poll officials prior to polling day
  • Ensuring polls are open on time
  • Ensuring the poll layout conforms with Elections Ontario standards
  • Resolving any issues that may arise
  • Ensuring that results are called in and that each statement of the poll is balanced
  • Returning all materials to the returning office as directed by the Returning Officer

Pay:

Election day $230.70 flat fee
Training $45.00 flat fee
Cellphone $15.00 flat fee

Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)

The DRO is responsible for setting up and disassembling their assigned poll and assisting the SDRO with the overall set up of the multiple polls. Responsibilities also include:

  • Processing electors eligible to vote at the poll
  • Issuing ballots to electors
  • Completing all paperwork for their poll, including balancing the results and returning all materials to the returning office as directed by the Returning Officer

Pay:

Advance Polls $183.51 per day
Election day $196.63 flat fee
Training $45.00 flat fee
Cellphone (advance polls) $2.50 per day

Poll Clerk

The Poll Clerk reports directly to the Deputy Returning Officer. The Poll Clerk works closely with the DRO to ensure the proper functioning of the poll. Responsibilities also include:

  • Assisting in setting up, opening and disassembling the poll as required
  • Locating electors name on the polling day List of Electors and striking the electors name from the polling day List of Electors

Pay:

Advance Polls $180.00 per day
Election day $157.30 flat fee
Training $45.00 flat fee

Tabulator Deputy Returning Officer (TDRO)

The TDRO is appointed to maintain the proper operation of the voting equipment and assist electors with questions or issues with the voting equipment. Responsibilities also include:

  • Unpacking and packing the voting equipment
  • Performing logic and accuracy tests on the voting equipment
  • Trouble shooting problems that may arise with the voting equipment

Pay:

Advance Polls $180.00 per day
Training $20.00 per hour

Revision Assistant (PDRA)

The PDRA is responsible for ensuring electors, who are eligible to vote at that location, are properly processed to allow them to vote. Responsibilities also include:

  • Verifying whether an elector's name appears on the Polling Day List of Electors
  • Assisting an elector to complete an Addition to the List of Electors (F0520) form

Pay:

Election day $157.30 flat fee
Training $45.00 flat fee

Information Assistant (APIA or PDIA)

The APIA or PDIA is responsible for greeting electors as they enter the voting location, requesting that electors have the appropriate identification ready and directing them to the appropriate poll or to the help desk for further assistance.

Your Returning Officer will advise you regarding other payment for expenses incurred while performing the job.

Pay:

Advance polls $13.00 per hour
Election day $13.00 per hour
Training $26.00 flat fee
